Shrink the Work, Expand Your Results: The Magic of Time Blocking

You're either moving forward or you're moving sideways. You can't do both. -Johanna Godinez

You’re either moving forward or you’re moving sideways. You can’t do both.

Life is a series of choices.

Will I do what I know I must do so I can take one more step toward my dream?

Or will I do what feels simple and easy, even though it’s a step sideways, at best?

Johanna’s metaphor highlights the fact that daily forward progress is required so you can achieve the results you desire.

One of the best tools I’ve found to help me make daily forward progress toward my dreams is time blocking, because “The work will expand to fill the time allotted.”

Task Timing is when you put a clock on your activities to see how long you take to accomplish a specific task.

But because there is no deadline, you have no pressure to complete your task within a specific time period.

Time blocking forces you to shrink the work to fill a specific amount of time. Share on X

When I time myself to see how long it takes to write 500 words, it can take me ages to get those words onto the page.

But if I limit myself – set aside a specific block of time – to generate those same 500 words, I discover I can complete them in far less time.

Challenge yourself to write 500 words in half the time you think you need.

Do it consistently for 21 days. By the end of the first week you’ll discover you’re meeting this mini-deadline with ease.

The remaining 14 days are to reinforce your new habit as you build an effective daily writing routine.
