Day 203: Edith Wharton – There are two ways of spreading light

There are two ways of spreading light: to be the candle or the mirror that reflects it

-Edith Wharton

A bonfire atop a cliff might alert sailors that the coast was near – but only if conditions were clear.

That same light – now atop a tower and positioned between a large mirror and a Fresnel lens – now shoots the light across miles of ocean and in almost all weather.

Same light, vastly different results.

Which do you choose to be?

The light visible only when someone is close by, and only under optimal conditions?

Or the light visible for miles of dark ocean, through rain, fog and almost any other weather?

If you believe you were born to live a life of significance, a life that will positively impact people - no matter where they are - you are the lighthouse, not the bonfire. Click To Tweet

You require power to generate the light for those people to see. That power originates deep inside us, and typically is buried under ton of rubble we identify as trauma.

The individual best positioned to help a drunk reclaim their life is the recovered alcoholic – the person who dealt with the trauma and psychological fallout from it who can now share their experience, strength and hope with those who most need it.

Whatever your personal situation is, someone out there knows precisely – down to the most minute details – what you feel and they also know how to get out of the mire and the mud and the muck so you can live a life of purpose.

If you’ve done the hard, internal work required to uncover your light, it’s your duty to be the lighthouse of safety for everyone else who is currently travelling the same valley of despair you conquered.

Embrace your power and use it to empower the people you were born to help.
