You know what I did after I wrote my first novel? I shut up and wrote twenty-three more. -Michael Connelly

You know what I did after I wrote my first novel? I shut up and wrote twenty-three more.

-Michael Connelly

The way you write a single book is the same way you write 23 books.

The only difference is that, over time, you will hone your skills to greater and greater heights.

The more experienced you are as a writer, the better and faster your writing becomes.

Like a great bottle of wine, your writing process becomes more refined with age. It becomes easier to write the next book than it was to write the last book.

Writing is the process of self-development in all areas of your life, as well. The better a human being you become, the more clearly you will use your words to connect with your audience; the more deeply you will connect with them and they with you.

If you haven’t written your first book yet, the idea of writing dozens more probably feels a little intimidating. Strike that fear from your mind and from your heart.

Focus on the task in front of you: completing your first book. The rest will come in time.

Focus on writing the very best book you can write today, fully understanding you will see a dozen ways to improve it ten seconds after you publish.

This is the fundamental truth of the writing life.

We are always learning new skills and growing in our knowledge.

It’s a beautiful thing.

Step 1. Schedule your writing sessions

Step 2. Keep those appointments with yourself

Step 3. Write for the allotted time – whether you feel like it or not. This is the key.

Build a healthy writing habit and your book will be finished before you know it (and probably before you’re ready for it, too!)
