The job of any good coach or mentor is to open the doors of possibility for their charges. A good coach helps them believe the dream, the goal, is possible for them personally.

That’s a beautiful thing.

Because until I believe a thing is possible FOR ME, it’s not.

It’s “impossible.”

My favorite example is Roger Bannister and the 4-minute mile.

On May 5, 1954, the entire world knew running a sub-4-minute mile was “impossible.”

Then, on May 6, 1954, Roger Bannister smashed that limiting belief and opened the doors of possibility for the entire running world.

Since that day, 1,663 men have accomplished that same feat.

In fact, they’ve smashed Bannister’s record by almost 17 full seconds.

The current world record for a mile, set in 1999, is 3:43.13.

It’s incredible what we can accomplish when we believe in ourselves, isn’t it?

It’s incredible what we can accomplish when we believe we can achieve our dreams.

Can we get there on our own?

Of course. One motivated human being can do anything they set their minds to, apply self-discipline and tenacity, and embrace the attitude that nothing will stand in their way.

Nothing.

But a great coach can help immensely, because collaboration will always open more doors to possibility than we can come up with on our own.

One plus one does equal three sometimes. This is one of those times.

A great coach can also help you shortcut the learning curve so you get there faster and easier than you can on your own.

What’s your dream?

Write it down.

Who’s going to help you get there?

Write that down too.

What’s your deadline for accomplishing this dream?

If you don’t have one, your dream will always be just that…. A dream.

Pick a date. Write it down.

Then do the work required, with the help of your coach, to get there as fast as you can.

Because at that personal finish line lies your fulfilment and joy.  It’s a beautiful thing.
