Day 158: Harvey MacKay – Deadlines help you organize your time

Deadlines aren't bad. They help you organize your time. They help you set priorities. They make you get going when you might not feel like it. -Harvey MacKay

The Deadline – a time limit for the completion of your first draft – is an excellent tool that provides inspiration and motivation so you can get your first draft finished.

But how do you set an achievable deadline for your first draft?

I answer this question with Manuscript Math, because it’s a great tool that will kick open the doors of possibility and show you that yes, you can write your first draft far faster than you ever imagined.

  • 1. Decide how long your manuscript should be.
  • 2. Determine how much time you can devote to writing each day
  • 3. Determine your writing speed – how many words you write per hour
  • 4. Deadline = Manuscript Length / (Words Per Hour x Hours Per Day)

It’s also one of my favorite pieces of the writing puzzle to teach.
