You can’t control inspiration, nor can you order it to show up on command. Inspiration is, at best, fickle.
You can, however, design your life to welcome inspiration more often.
A habit – a routine – is simply an action repeated regularly until it becomes automatic.
A habit removes decision-making from the process in advance. This is why it’s so powerful.
Building an effective writing routine isn’t difficult, but it does require discipline, especially in the beginning. This is why so many authors (me included) recommend writing at the same time every day.
It simplifies the habit-building process.
Your writing habit begins with scheduling your writing sessions on your calendar. It doesn’t get any easier than this.
The harder part can be showing up at the appointed hour, sitting down in front of your computer or typewriter, placing your hands on the keyboard and character by character, filling the blank page with words.
Write until the allotted time expires or your predetermined word count is achieved. These are minimums – the lowest level of acceptable results. Exceed them at will, but never allow yourself to do less. Once you make an exception, it’s easier to make it tomorrow, and even easier the day after that.
Your writing habit is the engine that powers your journey down Publication Highway. It’s what guarantees your success and makes your published book inevitable.
